Can You Tell the Difference?

Filed under: MP3s, Random Fun — kingkong @ 1:52 am

Remember this game they used to play on Sesame Street, when they used to bring two oranges and an apple and ask you which is the odd one out. Well this website is kind of the same thing but for adult music buff, or that savant from House. It asks you the difference between which of two identical mp3s of different sound qualities 320 kbps and 128 kbps! I obviously failed but i am usually really good at telling the difference, to my defense the volume wasn’t all the way up, so you cant really tell at low db, thats mainly when higher quality really comes into play! So turn your volume wayyyy up and give it your best guess! I am usually really good at telling the quality of things but it seems like the song type which threw me off! ok ok fine i suck! See if you do!

In telecommunications, bit rate or data transfer rate is the average number of bits, characters, or blocks per unit time passing between equipment in a data transmission system. This is typically measured in multiples of the units bit per second or byte per second.

So the higher the number of bits transfered, the more information that can be transmitted, therefore better sound quality! Check if you have the ears of a musician. Click here!

Update: First, I am surprising enraged with my ISP (insert bad acronym for ISP) service as of now since they started traffic shaping upload of certain types of packets!  I will let you know more with my what.cd update! Secondly, i have a waffles.fm account!! wooo hooo!

Window Vista SP1: Get Rid of Install Files

Filed under: DIY, Windows — kingkong @ 5:26 am

So you bought a new computer (before vista sp1), it had vista! You watched all the mac ads, trashing vista! You hated the Mac guy! You complained in forums about vista’s too many security beeps, and the slow file transfer on the hard drive! Vista promises, for update soon! Vista announces SP3 for Windows XP! You debate going back to XP. You really debate going back to XP. Vista SP1 is out. Vista SP1 has a bunch of install files jamming up your computer. Enter [king.kong].

I am going to outline how to get rid of all those extra files you placed inadvertently on your computer when you install Vista SP1! If your having trouble installing it with Windows update make sure you have ALL the other updates installed, then Vista SP1 will become available! Dumb you say?! How dare you go against Bill Gates (pronounce: Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Third Cousin)? hehe.

So assuming you have already installed all the files and you have complained about the actual nothingness of the update and you want to free up some space taken up by the significant update. Then do the following!

There are no manual steps involved. Just open your Windows command prompt and type vsp1cln.exe (short for Vista SP1 Cleaner). It takes less than a minute to execute.

Make sure you are happy because once you do this you can roll back to pre-Vista SP1. [insert witty and relevant metaphor]

Safari For Windows!

Filed under: Browsers, Windows, apple — kingkong @ 5:01 am

The browser wars have definitely begun, and Apple Safari has shot the first attack in the long to come and disputed battle. Safari brags fastest loading time of all major browsing platforms such as Firefox, IE, and Opera. I have used Firefox and IE extensively and to me the apparent better browser is Firefox, for that same reason I believe that all open source software is better customized by the user then by the large software companies such as Apple, Microsoft. Safari is pretty much the exception to my rule! I am starting to love it, you honestly can’t shake the appeal and likability to the ads that apple has. Secondly when the present something they present it with such style and flair that most applications lack. Wooo Firey fox, pfft apple has draggable tabs, that if you drag em off the page they form new windows! Check out the demo below:

The main reason i am excited for this browser it creates more competition in the market place for different tips and tricks, which in overall creates a better interface for the user! Such as Firefox hailed in tabbed browsing, newer browser will add there flavor and touch into the mix. So i am definitely going to check out this insane browser on my machine you should too!

Update: i was able to get my hands on what.cd invite which is great i am testing it out now expect a review in a couple of weeks! still looking for waffles.fm invite though!

HD done right, vimeo

Filed under: HD, Start Ups, Video, Youtube — kingkong @ 7:19 am

So the hottest thing in video lately is getting your content in high quality and like all other things faster! Vimeo has been around for sometime now, and have gained a good following, it has unique sets of videos, and channel authors! I personally hope it takes a leading role in the video content online, its interface is clean simple and allows for good navigation, which is key for me. I found myself searching for popular clips i see all over the internet and Vimeo hasn’t gained enough of mainstream traffic but it holds great promise, but like all other video sites there good before they get bastardized by the legal system, protection rights, and horny young teens jump on the wagon and everything becomes censorship and violation. Many video site (pronounce: youtube) have been know to just pull channels, which really throws off both the author and the viewer from wanting to come back. The way they limit video uploading is different too its size based not length of the clip, so you can upload up to 500Mb per week which allows for clips of all lengths and qualities. Above is quality spectrum between other video sites and vimeo. The video below goes to illustrate the visible difference between youtube and vimeo:

the art of obtaining an invite

Filed under: File Sharing, P2P — kingkong @ 1:22 am

Well today your local monkey got into an argument with his friend aka fool timmy, about being able to obtain invites to certain torrent sites, with in a span of a week! This optimistic monkey set off trying to obtain these invites and landed in a pool of many insane human being scrambling around like there were on the block (BB9 reference) looking for the same thing. So I started looking through irc chatrooms forums posts and blogs for invites for many of these invite based websites! Pfft to my angry i was able to dig up nothing there is a couple of leads i have still going but nothing has panned out yet. What.cd and Waffles.fm have eluded many a user this year since the close of the famous bittorrent site oink. But I promise if anyone can do it, its me i will find invites, and once i get enough of a ratio i will give away this invites here and between another forum i promised i would give out! So how do you obtain your invites? This monkey is curious (i hate curious george)
