Tracker Creator Passes!

The creator of the tracker keeping your torrents up, and delivering you the number of leechers and seeders on a particular file, and bringing us closer together as a community! His name was Merrin! Here is what people close to had to say!

“It is with a heavy heart that I write this, Merrin the founder of MVGroup.org passed away suddenly on Monday 5th May. He had been ill for sometime but the extent of his illness was not known to the staff , his family or his personal friends. His passing will leave an enormous void at MVGroup. I was asked me to write something here about Merrin, but to be honest I just can’t face it, the thought of doing so is just too painful. So I’ll simply add an abridged version of a post Merrin made at MVGroup some time long, long ago, it will give you a much better insight into who he was and what he was all about than anything I could have written.”

Registration is open at there forum! You may pay your respects here!

ISP Throttling Your Bittorrent Traffic

Filed under: File Sharing, P2P — kingkong @ 3:50 pm

We are alot more than just a huge monkey with a big heart. We are also TorrentFreaks! When we saw there latest post i was so happy that i couldn’t wait to call up my ISP and say hey, i now have proof you guys throttle traffic ( for those less knowledgeable monkeys throttling means that apply traffic shaping to information you send and receive through the internet, specifically to deal with bittorrent traffic) and i can finally argue or threaten to expose them hehe! The site simply is a Web application Glasnost simulates BitTorrent downloads on your computer to determine whether or not your internet service provider (ISP) is throttling your BitTorrent transfers. It also compares regular download speed which hopefully aren’t also throttled, and bittorrent downloads. Various other combinations of ports ultimately to determine what is being throttled if anything!

You can find the web app here! Leave your results in the comments below!

RIP TorrentSpy

This is a sad sad day! I feel that all torrents are just being hindered by all this legal bullshit, and its going to continue one way or the other! Just let us do it efficiently and the users can enjoy it fully and the content providers can reap the full benefits of there content getting out into the public. R.I.P 03/24/08 TorrentSpy

Story by torrentfreak.com:

TorrentSpy is no more, Justin Bunnell, the founder of the site writes: “We have decided on our own, not due to any court order or agreement, to bring the TorrentSpy.com search engine to an end and thus we permanently closed down worldwide on March 24, 2008.”

The main reason for the shutdown is the ongoing legal battle with the MPAA, which started February 2006. “We now feel compelled to provide the ultimate method of privacy protection for our users - permanent shutdown,” Justin writes.

By the end of 2006 TorrentSpy was more popular than any other BitTorrent site, but this changed quickly in August 2007, when a federal judge ordered TorrentSpy to log all user data. The judge ruled that TorrentSpy had to monitor its users in order to create detailed logs of their activities, and hand these over to the MPAA.

In a response to this decision - and to ensure the privacy of their users - TorrentSpy decided that it was best to block access to all users from the US. This led to a huge decrease in traffic and revenue.

This was not enough for the MPAA, who argued that TorrentSpy had ignored the court decision. The legal battle continued, and this eventually led to a preventative closure of the site by Justin, to protect the privacy of its users.

Brokep from The Pirate Bay had this to say about the closure: “Today all big torrent sites are pressured somehow. TPB has its share of pressure, however we expected it and have a legal system that is more just in cases like this. The way that the copyright lobby is going at this is totally wrong and we can’t let them win. And we won’t let them win. Today we reached a loss of a site, but it was more a person having to give up for economical reasons than anything else. The copyright lobby has their big cards - money and influence. In the long run they will have to give up as well. And when they do, I’ll go to the US and buy Justin a well-deserved beer.”

At this point it is not clear what will happen to the TorrentSpy.com domain. The domain was offered to other BitTorrent site owners, but has not yet been sold.
