Task Switch XP

Filed under: Apps, Windows — kingkong @ 3:06 am

This monkey recently switched back from Vista to XP, nothing great about the switch its just my laptop was running a bit long on memory with Firefox 2, eating away at my memory i need a really simple and good OS, which is stable and allows me to watch Flash Videos in real full screen ( ahem Ubuntu). Now what i got used to when i was using Vista is the useful previews it gives you when your using Alt+Tab and when i went back to XP i was in the dark again not know which was a blog post or which was the latest .pdf of the my resume. Since Windows XP, only shows the logo of the application pretty slick back in 2000, but all things can’t be timeless, well maybe somethings can.

Heres how it looks:

Window Vista SP1: Get Rid of Install Files

Filed under: DIY, Windows — kingkong @ 5:26 am

So you bought a new computer (before vista sp1), it had vista! You watched all the mac ads, trashing vista! You hated the Mac guy! You complained in forums about vista’s too many security beeps, and the slow file transfer on the hard drive! Vista promises, for update soon! Vista announces SP3 for Windows XP! You debate going back to XP. You really debate going back to XP. Vista SP1 is out. Vista SP1 has a bunch of install files jamming up your computer. Enter [king.kong].

I am going to outline how to get rid of all those extra files you placed inadvertently on your computer when you install Vista SP1! If your having trouble installing it with Windows update make sure you have ALL the other updates installed, then Vista SP1 will become available! Dumb you say?! How dare you go against Bill Gates (pronounce: Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Third Cousin)? hehe.

So assuming you have already installed all the files and you have complained about the actual nothingness of the update and you want to free up some space taken up by the significant update. Then do the following!

There are no manual steps involved. Just open your Windows command prompt and type vsp1cln.exe (short for Vista SP1 Cleaner). It takes less than a minute to execute.

Make sure you are happy because once you do this you can roll back to pre-Vista SP1. [insert witty and relevant metaphor]

Safari For Windows!

Filed under: Browsers, Windows, apple — kingkong @ 5:01 am

The browser wars have definitely begun, and Apple Safari has shot the first attack in the long to come and disputed battle. Safari brags fastest loading time of all major browsing platforms such as Firefox, IE, and Opera. I have used Firefox and IE extensively and to me the apparent better browser is Firefox, for that same reason I believe that all open source software is better customized by the user then by the large software companies such as Apple, Microsoft. Safari is pretty much the exception to my rule! I am starting to love it, you honestly can’t shake the appeal and likability to the ads that apple has. Secondly when the present something they present it with such style and flair that most applications lack. Wooo Firey fox, pfft apple has draggable tabs, that if you drag em off the page they form new windows! Check out the demo below:

Apple Safari Windows Demo from Mahdi Yusuf on Vimeo.

The main reason i am excited for this browser it creates more competition in the market place for different tips and tricks, which in overall creates a better interface for the user! Such as Firefox hailed in tabbed browsing, newer browser will add there flavor and touch into the mix. So i am definitely going to check out this insane browser on my machine you should too!

Update: i was able to get my hands on what.cd invite which is great i am testing it out now expect a review in a couple of weeks! still looking for waffles.fm invite though!

Faster Shutdowns!

Filed under: DIY, Windows — kingkong @ 10:44 pm

Have you ever hit the shutdown button on your computer, when running out of the house. Then come back home the computer is still shutdown, which i personally hate because I pay for my electricity and hydro  . So I recently came across this quick tip that by passes all the systems calls and achieves the goal of actually shutting down your computer in one step.

Start the windows run program using the Windows Button+R

Then once that is complete type in shutdown -f -t 0 and press run

Then your computer will proceed, to shutdown as fast as possible, with the most limited system calls, and procedures.

Windows XP stomps on Vista

Filed under: Ramblings, Windows — kingkong @ 9:24 pm

Well I’ve had Vista for almost a year now, and its been a great experience.  Most of my software from XP is still working with Vista, and the upgrade to Vista itself was a seamless process, much unlike when Windows XP came out.  Now with SP3 released for Windows XP it has surpassed Vista in with its own SP1 in service on various benchmark tests. Now the question is how much performance will you be willing to give up for style! I understand style over comfort, for example I have this crazy suit I hate wearing it but i am the flyest monkey at the party. So its a balancing act that Vista hasn’t definitely hasn’t mastered! CNET had the following to say!

Vista’s first service pack, to be released early next year, is intended to boost the operating system’s performance. However, when Vista with the Service Pack 1 (SP1) beta was put through benchmark testing by researchers at Florida-based software development company Devil Mountain Software, the improvement was not overwhelming, leaving the latest Windows iteration outshined by its predecessor.

Vista, both with and without SP1, performed notably slower than XP with SP3 in the test, taking over 80 seconds to complete the test, compared to the beta SP3-enhanced XP’s 35 seconds.

Vista’s performance with the service pack increased less than 2 percent compared to performance without SP1–much lower than XP’s SP3 improvement of 10 percent. The tests, run on a Dell XPS M1710 test bed with a 2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU and 1GB of RAM, put Microsoft Office 2007 through a set of productivity tasks, including creating a compound document and supporting workbooks and presentation materials.

In response to the test, a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement that although the company understood the interest in the service packs, they are “still in development”…..
